Distance, heat, and the map lie
Mistake one: assuming you can walk anywhere. The Strip is 4.2 miles corner to corner and resorts are enormous; going from the Bellagio front door to the Bellagio pool is a quarter mile inside the building. Mistake two: underestimating the heat. Between June and September, midday is 105-115F and pavement radiates. Do outdoor stuff before 10am or after 7pm and carry water. Casinos will refill a bottle for free at any bar.
Mistake three: booking a room at the far end of your itinerary. If your shows and dinners are mid-Strip (Bellagio, Cosmopolitan, Caesars), don’t stay at Mandalay Bay or the Sahara. You’ll spend an hour a day just walking to yourself. Mistake four: not checking resort fees before booking. The $89 rate that becomes $145 with fees and tax is not a deal.
Money, food, and shows
Mistake five: eating at your hotel every meal. Strip hotel restaurants are 30-50% more expensive than the same chef's off-Strip location, and Chinatown on Spring Mountain Road has better food at a third the price. Mistake six: buying show tickets at rack rate. Tix4Tonight kiosks and the show's own website day-of usually knock 30-50% off, and Cirque shows regularly have $69 seats if you’re flexible.
Mistake seven: using casino ATMs (see above, $8+ per withdrawal). Mistake eight: exchanging currency at the airport. Mistake nine: ordering a cocktail without asking the price at a nightclub; a well drink at Omnia or Zouk is $22-28 before tip. Mistake ten: driving the Strip on a Friday or Saturday night. Las Vegas Boulevard between Spring Mountain and Tropicana becomes a 15-mph parking lot from 8pm to 3am. Use Frank Sinatra Drive on the west side or Koval Lane on the east.
Behavior that ruins the trip
Drinking too much on day one is the classic; the desert dehydrates you and cocktails come faster than you can track. Pace it, eat before you gamble, and know that most casinos will comp non-alcoholic drinks too. Don’t play games you haven’t learned; blackjack side bets, 6:5 blackjack, and any "lucky ladies" bonus are house-edge traps. Stick to 3:2 blackjack, pass line at craps, or slots you understand the paytable on.
Don’t skip sleep. Two nights of five hours plus 100F heat plus dry air is how people end up in urgent care with a nosebleed and a migraine. And don’t try to see everything: three shows, four buffets, a day trip, a pool day, and a nightclub in three nights is not a vacation, it's an ordeal.
Good to know
What's the single biggest first-timer mistake?+
Booking a room without adding resort fee plus 13.85% tax to compare it fairly against other properties. The rate you see is rarely the rate you pay.
Is it okay to bring kids to the Strip?+
Yes, but choose the resort carefully. Excalibur, Circus Circus, and MGM Grand are kid-friendly; Wynn, the Cosmopolitan, and most boutique properties are not, and you’ll get side-eye pushing a stroller through the casino floor after 9pm.
