How the Strip actually works
The Strip runs south to north from Mandalay Bay to the Stratosphere, about 4.2 miles. Walking end to end takes 90 minutes without stops — and no one does that in July heat. The monorail runs along the east side from MGM Grand to Sahara for $6 a ride or $15 day pass, but it does not stop at Wynn or Bellagio which is baffling. Free trams connect Mandalay Bay to Excalibur and Mirage to Treasure Island. The Vegas Loop (Boring Company Teslas) links Resorts World to the Convention Center for $5.
Where to base yourself
Central Strip (Bellagio to Venetian) is the sweet spot for first-timers — everything walkable, best restaurants, highest room rates. South Strip (Aria to Mandalay Bay) is quieter and good for pool time. North Strip (Wynn to Resorts World) is the newest and least crowded but a longer walk to central action. Avoid staying at the Stratosphere unless price is everything — it is a 25-minute walk or $15 Uber to anywhere you want to be. Ubers cost $10 to $25 for most Strip-to-Strip rides.

Is the Strip walkable?+
Yes but slower than you think — pedestrian bridges, escalators and casino detours add 30 percent to any map distance. Two blocks can take 20 minutes.
Do I need a rental car on the Strip?+
No. Parking is $15 to $25 a night at most resorts and Uber covers everything. Rent a car only for day trips to Red Rock, Valley of Fire or Hoover Dam.
