The event and dates
The National Finals Rodeo runs ten consecutive nights in early-to-mid December at the Thomas & Mack Center on the UNLV campus. Roughly 175,000 people attend across the run. NFR draws a specific crowd — Western wear, country music, and a preference for certain properties (South Point, Orleans, Gold Coast, Golden Nugget, Plaza).
Rates during NFR sit 2-3x normal at the Western-oriented hotels and roughly 1.5x elsewhere on the Strip. South Point (the unofficial NFR headquarters) runs $220-320 during the run vs $80-110 outside it. Orleans and Gold Coast, both Boyd properties near the Rio, follow similar patterns.
Where to stay
South Point is the pick if you want the full NFR experience — Cowboy Christmas trade show shuttles, live country music nightly at the equestrian center, and the crowd all around you. It is 15 minutes south of the Strip proper, with a huge parking garage and free self-parking.
For NFR-adjacent but Strip-based, MGM Grand and Tropicana (now closed, check Bally's future site) are closest to Thomas & Mack. Downtown Golden Nugget and Plaza run country concerts and have shuttle programs during NFR. Skip Wynn, Cosmopolitan and Aria — they are open and fine, but the crowd and vibe do not match.
Tickets, traffic and everything else
NFR performance tickets sell out months ahead through PRCA channels. Secondary market prices run $200-1,500 per seat. If you cannot get in, watch at South Point's Grandview Lounge or any casino sports bar — every TV shows the rodeo. The Cowboy Christmas trade show at the Convention Center is free and huge.
December weather is mild (60F days, 40F nights). Pools are closed. Restaurants take reservations weeks out at Western-oriented spots (Michael's at South Point, Vic & Anthony's downtown). Rideshare from Strip hotels to Thomas & Mack runs $12-20; from South Point it is $8. Traffic on Tropicana Avenue at 6:30pm is bad.

Is NFR week a good time for a general Vegas trip?+
Only if you enjoy the Western crowd and country music. Nightclubs, EDM venues and the Fashion Show mall crowd all take a back seat. Restaurants and shows are still fully operational.
How early should I book South Point?+
By August for the best selection. South Point often sells out its ten-night NFR block in the summer, and remaining nights can go for premium.
