Why these two months work
April and October share the same virtue: temperatures across the state land in a livable band. Las Vegas is 80F, Reno is 65F, Great Basin at Ely is 55F. Everything outdoor is open. Everything indoor is running. Pools are functional in Vegas (open both months). Tahoe is between seasons but still passable — no snow, no crowds.
Prices behave. Strip midweek rooms sit at $110-160 (vs $50-80 summer or $250+ during major events). Reno runs $75-100. Lake Tahoe is at its lowest annual pricing outside dead early-May. Great Basin National Park is fully open, the Lehman Caves tours run, and the campgrounds have space.
What to watch for
April has one major spike: NFL Draft, if it lands in Vegas (it did in 2022). Otherwise the main April event is NASCAR at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the second weekend of March, which spills into April rates. Spring break in the first two weeks pushes weekend rooms up 30% at Strip properties popular with college crowds (Flamingo, Linq, Excalibur).
October has Life is Beautiful (mid-month, downtown Las Vegas, three-day festival with 180,000 attendees). Downtown rooms — Circa, Golden Nugget, Plaza, El Cortez — hit $300+ that weekend and sell out. Delta Days in Elko (Basque Festival), the Nevada Day parade in Carson City late October, and the balloon race in Reno all add small regional spikes.
Where to actually go
Valley of Fire in April is peak — wildflowers on the sandstone, 75F, and cool nights. Same trip in October is drier but with the same temperature and better light. Great Basin's Wheeler Peak trail (13,065 feet) is passable in both months, though October adds risk of early snow above 10,000 feet.
Lake Tahoe in October has the aspens at Marlette Lake and along Highway 431. Casinos are quiet, restaurants take walk-ins, and Emerald Bay views are cleaner than summer. The lake water is 55F — cold but not shocking. Kayak rentals close mid-October but Zephyr Cove operates cruises through the month.
