Why it beats Red Rock
Valley of Fire is 55 miles northeast of Vegas via I-15, about an hour drive. Entry is $15 per car, no reservation required. The rock formations are more dramatic than Red Rock — the Fire Wave, Elephant Rock, and the Pink Canyon slot are all bucket-list photo stops. It is significantly less crowded than Red Rock, especially past 10am. Star Wars, Total Recall and Transformers all filmed here. The visitor center is genuinely good and worth 30 minutes for the geology and Ancestral Puebloan history.
How to do it in a day
Leave Vegas by 7am to hit the Fire Wave before the sun is overhead — the 1.5-mile round trip trail is unmarked in places, download the AllTrails map before you lose signal. Continue to Mouse's Tank Road for petroglyphs and the Rainbow Vista overlook. Lunch at the visitor center picnic tables (no restaurants in the park — pack food and water). Afternoon: Elephant Rock and Atlatl Rock petroglyphs. Combine with Overton for a quick museum visit or Lake Mead for a swim on the way back. Full day, about $30 in gas plus entry.

For photography and quiet, yes. For proximity and easy hiking with facilities, Red Rock. Do both on separate days if possible.
Can you camp inside the park?+
Yes — two campgrounds, $25 a night, first-come-first-served. Book early on spring weekends.
