Ski season: December to March
Heavenly, Northstar and Mt Rose all open in mid-to-late November depending on snow. December through March is peak: rooms at Harveys, Harrah's Lake Tahoe and Hard Rock Stateline run $250-500 on weekends, $180-300 midweek. Holiday weeks (Christmas, MLK, Presidents Day) hit $600+. Chains often required on Kingsbury Grade and I-80.
Incline Village on the north shore is quieter and more expensive — Hyatt Regency Incline runs $400-700 in season. Days are short (sunset at 4:45pm in December) but the lake is spectacular. Almost every restaurant and shop is open; ski shuttles run from most Stateline hotels to Heavenly base.
Shoulder mud: April to May
Ski season ends mid-April. May is the worst month for a Tahoe trip: rooms are cheap ($100-160 at Harveys, $180 at Hyatt Incline), but many restaurants close for a two-week cleaning break, boat rentals have not started, hiking trails are still snowy above 7,000 feet, and the lake is 45F. Casinos are open, weather is unpredictable (snow one day, 65F the next).
Late May improves — memorial Day weekend brings crowds back and most seasonal businesses reopen. If you want low prices and casino-only entertainment, early May works. For anything outdoor, wait.
Summer to autumn: June to November
June through August is the second peak. Weekend rooms at Stateline properties hit $280-450, and Incline Village pushes $500+. Kayak rentals at Zephyr Cove, cruises on the MS Dixie II, and hiking at Spooner Lake all open by mid-June. Weekdays are notably cheaper. Weather is 75-80F days, 45F nights.
September is Tahoe's best month: 70F days, low crowds, everything still open, rates back to $150-220 midweek. October brings the Kokanee salmon run at Taylor Creek and aspen color around Marlette Lake. Early November is very quiet and cheap ($90 at Harveys) — but ski resorts have not opened and weather can turn to storms overnight.

Is the Nevada side or California side cheaper?+
Nevada side (Stateline, Incline) has the casinos and slightly better hotel-room value at mid-range properties. California side (South Lake Tahoe city) has more restaurant variety and is comparable on price for vacation rentals.
