Who Tonopah is for
Tonopah suits astronomy travelers (the town is a certified dark-sky destination and has a public star park), US-95 drivers breaking up the 7-hour Vegas-to-Reno slog, mining history buffs at the Tonopah Historic Mining Park, and anyone drawn to the deeply weird Clown Motel next to the town cemetery. The Mizpah Hotel, opened 1907 and once the tallest building in Nevada, is the standout at $110 to $180. The Clown Motel runs $70 to $110 and is a genuine experience. The Best Western Hi-Desert Inn is the reliable chain at $110 to $160.
It does not suit anyone looking for restaurants beyond about six options, nightlife, or comfort travel. Tonopah is remote — the nearest larger town is Hawthorne, 100 miles north.
What is walkable
The whole town is walkable in a morning. From the Mizpah you can walk to the Tonopah Historic Mining Park (a working mining site preserved as a museum, with a real headframe you can climb), the Central Nevada Museum, the Clown Motel and its neighboring pioneer cemetery, and roughly six restaurants and bars. The Tonopah Star Park is a 20-minute walk northeast of downtown with interpretive panels and unbeatable Milky Way views on clear moonless nights. Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park (fossilized ancient marine reptiles) is 2 hours north.

The hotel leans hard into the Lady in Red legend on the fifth floor. Whether or not you buy it, the 1907 building itself is worth seeing.
