Winnemucca suits I-80 drivers wanting a solid overnight, hunters and anglers heading to the Santa Rosa Range, Basque food travelers doing a Northern Nevada crawl (Ormachea's and the Martin Hotel are both here), and rockhounds hunting fire opals at Virgin Valley. The Winnemucca Inn and Model T Casino run $80 to $140. Chain hotels along West Winnemucca Boulevard run $90 to $150. Rates spike during the Ranch Hand Rodeo in March and the Tri-County Fair in August.
It does not suit leisure travelers looking for scenery in town — the setting is high desert and functional. Anyone spending more than one night should have a specific plan for the Santa Rosas, the Black Rock Desert (Burning Man's playa is 90 minutes northwest) or the mining backroads.
What is walkable
From downtown you can walk to the Humboldt Museum (small but with a good Shoshone-Paiute collection), the Martin Hotel (opened 1898, Basque family-style dinners nightly), and Ormachea's for the other Basque option. Bridge Street has a handful of shops and bars. The Santa Rosa Range trailheads are 45 minutes to 90 minutes north. The Black Rock Desert playa access at Gerlach is 90 minutes northwest — flat, white and surreal even without Burning Man happening.

Both are legitimate. Winnemucca's Martin Hotel is older; Elko's Star Hotel is more famous. Try both if you can.

Yes, the truck stops on both ends of town off I-80 exit 176 and exit 180 are open around the clock.
