Lake Tahoe

The Nevada side of North America's largest alpine lake — Stateline casinos, Incline Village, and ski resorts. Lake Tahoe straddles Nevada and California and is 22 miles long, 12 miles wide, and 1,645 feet deep. The Nevada side runs from Stateline (South Lake Tahoe, next to the California border) up the east shore through Zephyr Cove and Sand Harbor to Incline Village on the north. At Stateline, four casinos — Harrah's, Harveys, Hard Rock, Bally's — sit yards from the state line, with $100-$300 rooms and full lake views. At 9pm in summer the casino garages are full and the beach clubs at Zephyr Cove are still serving.This is the site's wedding-in-the-mountains alternative — chapels and resorts along the shore, plus the year-round ski/lake combination. Winter brings Heavenly and Diamond Peak; summer brings Sand Harbor beach ($15 per car, arrive before 9am or the gate closes). Skip Tahoe if you don’t have a car or don’t want mountain roads. US-50 over Spooner Summit and SR-28 along the east shore are two-lane and slow — allow 45 min from Stateline to Incline in summer, 90 in winter with chains.

Nevada side or California side of Tahoe?

Nevada side (Stateline, Zephyr Cove, Incline) for casinos, Sand Harbor beach, and Diamond Peak. California side (South Lake Tahoe town, Emerald Bay, Kings Beach, Heavenly base) for restaurants and Emerald Bay. Most people cross the border multiple times a day.

When does Tahoe need snow chains?

Any storm November-April can trigger chain controls on US-50 (Echo Summit) and I-80 (Donner Summit). CalTrans posts requirements online. AWD with M+S tires often meets R2 requirements. Check before you drive; controls can close roads.
