Red Rock is what convention delegates and bachelorette parties do on their second morning when the buffet has lost its charm. Just 17 miles from the Bellagio, the escarpment rears up 3,000 feet in bands of crimson and cream sandstone, laced with slot canyons, wild burros and some of the best sport climbing in North America. A one-way 13-mile scenic drive lets you sample it from the car in 90 minutes; short trails from every pullout stretch that to a satisfying half-day. Sunset light on Calico Hills is the money shot.
Strategy: from October through May you need a timed-entry reservation ($2) on recreation.gov — grab an 8:00 or 9:00 slot to beat the tour buses and the heat. Skip midday June-September (surface temps hit 140°F on the rocks). Combine with brunch in Summerlin on the way out or a cocktail at Red Rock Casino Resort on the way back. Rock climbers should stop first at the visitor center for the permit board and current closures.

How much is entry to Red Rock Canyon?+
$20 per car, $10 per motorcycle, $8 per cyclist or pedestrian. Timed-entry reservations cost an extra $2 per vehicle from October 1 to May 31.
When can I visit for free?+
Four federal fee-free days each year: MLK Jr Day (Jan), Great Outdoors Day (June), National Public Lands Day (Sep) and Veterans Day (Nov). Timed-entry reservation is still required in season.
How long does the scenic drive take?+
The 13-mile one-way loop takes 45 minutes with no stops, 2-3 hours with pullouts and a short hike, or a full half-day if you add Ice Box or Calico Tanks (both 2.5 mi round trip).
Is it ever closed?+
The Scenic Drive closes overnight and on December 25. Individual trails close periodically for peregrine falcon nesting (Feb-July) — check the visitor center board.
Do I need to reserve in advance?+
Yes from October 1 through May 31, 8:00-17:00. Book at recreation.gov up to 30 days ahead. Outside those hours and June-September no reservation is needed, just the entry fee.
How do I get there from the Strip?+
Drive W Charleston Blvd/NV-159 west for 17 miles (25 min). Rideshare runs $35-45 one way but leaves you stranded — no return service inside. Several tour operators run half-day bus trips from Strip hotels for around $80.
