Vegas locals call it 'Mt Charleston,' and it's the reason a summer meltdown in the valley can turn into a pine-scented picnic 40 minutes later. The Spring Mountains rise straight out of the Mojave to nearly 12,000 feet — a proper island of ponderosa, aspen and bristlecone pine with 20°F cooler temperatures, snowfall in winter, and a fully operational ski resort at Lee Canyon. It's the surprise on many Vegas itineraries: a hiking, skiing and roasted-marshmallow escape that's closer than Red Rock in miles and utterly different in feel.
Two canyons matter: Kyle Canyon (NV-157) has the lodges, restaurants and Cathedral Rock trailhead; Lee Canyon (NV-156) has the ski resort and the aspen-lined Bristlecone Trail. Loop them via NV-158 for the classic day trip. In winter check nvroads.com for chain requirements — plows are frequent but Vegas rentals rarely have snow tires. The Mt Charleston Lodge cabins are a legit wedding-getaway spot, and the resort's outdoor fire-pit deck is peak après-anything.

How much does it cost?+
General entry is free. Developed day-use picnic areas (Cathedral Rock, Mary Jane Falls, Foxtail) cost $10 per vehicle. Lee Canyon ski lift tickets run $75-115 in season.
Are there free options?+
Trailhead parking and dispersed roadside stops are free. The Spring Mountains Visitor Gateway on Kyle Canyon Rd is free to enter and has excellent interpretive exhibits.
How long to visit?+
A full day for a good sampler: drive both canyons, hike one moderate trail (3-4 mi), lunch at Mt Charleston Lodge. Ski days run 9:00 to 16:00. Sunset dinners on the Lodge deck are worth the extra hour.
When is it closed?+
The recreation area never closes. NV-158 (the connector between canyons) closes November through May for snow. Lee Canyon Ski Resort operates December to March/April depending on snowpack.
Do I need reservations?+
No for hiking. Mt Charleston Lodge cabins and the Retreat on Charleston Peak book 2-3 months ahead for weekends. Lee Canyon rentals and lessons should be reserved at leecanyonlv.com in peak weeks.
How do I get there?+
US-95 north from the Strip for 20 miles, then NV-157 west (Kyle Canyon) or NV-156 west (Lee Canyon) for 15-18 miles. 45-60 minutes total. No transit; rideshare runs $60-80 one way and rarely wants to wait.
