Reno's twin city to the east — home to the Nugget Casino, the Rib Cook-Off, and a cleaner, more suburban downtown. Sparks is contiguous with Reno — you cross an invisible line on Prater Way or 4th Street and you’re in a different city with 108,000 people. Victorian Square along Victorian Avenue is a walkable four-block downtown with the Nugget Casino Resort as the anchor, plus wine bars, a movie theater and a small train museum. Rooms at the Nugget run $90-$180, casino minimums $10, and the Rib Cook-Off over Labor Day weekend draws 500,000 people to eat competition barbecue on the closed-off street.Sparks suits families, business travelers to the industrial parks east of town, and anyone who finds downtown Reno grittier than they want. It is quieter, newer, and the Sparks Marina — a 77-acre artificial lake in an old gravel pit — has a paved 2-mile loop that locals walk at dawn. Skip Sparks if you want nightlife: Victorian Avenue closes down by 11pm and the Nugget's casino floor is smaller and older than Peppermill or The Row.

Sparks est-elle une meilleure base que Reno ?

Un peu moins cher, un peu plus calme, un peu plus récent. Si vous voulez de la vie nocturne à pied et un accès à la rivière, logez au centre de Reno. Si vous voulez du familial avec la marina et que ça ne vous dérange pas de rouler 10 min jusqu'à Midtown, Sparks fait l’affaire.

Le Rib Cook-Off mérite-t-il qu’on organise son voyage autour ?

Si vous aimez le barbecue, oui — c’est 500 000 personnes sur cinq jours au week-end de Labor Day, et les hôtels affichent complet trois mois à l’avance. Réservez avant juin ou évitez carrément la semaine ; les prix doublent au Nugget.
