The staging effect
Burning Man runs the week before Labor Day at Black Rock City, 120 miles north of Reno on NV-447. Reno is the airport, the last real grocery store, and the shower stop on the way out. From the Sunday before the event through the Wednesday after Labor Day, every hotel in the Reno-Sparks area sees Burner demand.
Rates jump 40-100% at Peppermill, Atlantis, Grand Sierra, Silver Legacy and the Nugget Sparks. Airport-area properties (Hyatt Place, Courtyard) sell out first. Midweek Tuesday rooms that normally list at $80 hit $180-240. Pet-friendly rooms disappear fastest — many Burners travel with dogs.
Best properties for Burners and non-Burners
For Burners: Grand Sierra has the largest RV lot and pool access to rinse off. Circus Circus Reno takes late arrivals. Nugget Sparks has covered parking (relevant because playa dust ruins car paint if it rains). Truckee River-facing rooms at Renaissance and Whitney Peak are the recovery-oriented choice for post-event.
If you are visiting Reno that week without going to Burning Man, be aware that dust-covered Burners will be in every hotel elevator and every casino coffee shop. The vibe is fun but chaotic. Grand Sierra sees more of this than Peppermill, which stays more casino-normal. Downtown properties (Eldorado, Silver Legacy) are quieter than Sparks.
Booking and logistics
Book by March. Refundable rates evaporate by June. Many Burners book both ends (arrival hotel and exit hotel) to guarantee showers before flying out. Rental cars for Burning Man week must be reserved months ahead; RV rentals are booked out by February.
Exodus traffic on NV-447 south to I-80 can take 8-12 hours if you leave at the wrong time. Hotels on the Sunday and Monday after the burn are effectively serving stranded travelers all day. Late check-in and late check-out are worth requesting; front desks understand and often accommodate.
Good to know
Do hotels charge a dust cleaning fee?+
Some Sparks and I-80 properties have added dust/damage deposits during Burn week. Read the fine print. Most standard hotels do not, but expect stern signage about not bringing playa gear into rooms.
Is Fernley or Fallon a cheaper alternative?+
Fernley is 30 miles east of Reno and closer to the playa turnoff. Rooms are cheaper but limited (Best Western, Super 8) and also fill during Burn week. Fallon is further and less useful for airport access.
