Fremont Street, the original casinos, $5 blackjack and the Arts District — the Vegas that existed before the Strip. Downtown is where Vegas started in 1905 and where the casinos have real ceilings instead of painted skies. Fremont Street between Main and 4th is a covered pedestrian mall with the Viva Vision canopy — a light show every hour on the hour after 6pm — plus zipliners flying overhead. The vibe is louder, drunker and cheaper than the Strip. Golden Nugget rooms from $75, El Cortez from $45, drinks $6 instead of $18. At 9pm it feels like a party; by 2am it feels like a fight is about to start.The Arts District, south of Fremont along Main Street between Charleston and Colorado, is the other downtown — coffee at Vesta, cocktails at Velveteen Rabbit, First Friday art walks. This is where locals actually go. Skip staying here if you want quiet: the Fremont Street canopy noise carries, and the streets around the Bonanza gift shop and 8th Street get sketchy after midnight. Great if you want a proper drink for $12 instead of $22.

Is downtown Vegas safe at night?

Fremont Street between Main and 4th is patrolled and fine until 2am. East of Las Vegas Blvd on Fremont gets rougher — homeless encampments, aggressive panhandling. Stick to the pedestrian mall and Fremont East bar district and take a rideshare after midnight.

Can I walk from downtown to the Strip?

Technically yes, it is 3 miles down Las Vegas Blvd, but it is ugly, hot and passes through motels and empty lots. Take the Deuce bus ($8 day pass) or a rideshare ($12-$18).
