Reno

Northern Nevada's casino city on the Truckee River — smaller, cheaper and 45 minutes from Lake Tahoe. Reno is 450 miles north of Vegas and a completely different city. Population 265,000, elevation 4,500 feet, the Sierra Nevada rising to the west. The downtown casino core along Virginia Street — Eldorado, Silver Legacy, Circus Circus (all now one connected complex called The Row), plus Peppermill a mile south on South Virginia — has $10 blackjack, $6 beers, and rooms from $80. At 9pm downtown feels quieter than Vegas but Midtown, south of the river, is where locals actually drink.Reno works as a base if you want to ski Mount Rose, drive to Tahoe, catch a UNR game, or gamble without the Strip's markup. It is the site's northern casino alternative — the wedding chapels are cheaper (Chapel of the Bells has done ceremonies since 1962, $95 plus license), the sportsbooks are looser, and you can be in Truckee eating breakfast in 40 minutes. Skip Reno if you want a proper Vegas nightclub scene — it doesn’t exist here.

Questions, answered

Reno or Vegas for a first Nevada trip?

Vegas if you want the full scale — mega-resorts, headline shows, world-class restaurants. Reno if you want it cheaper, closer to mountains, and less overwhelming. Reno + Tahoe combined is a stronger week than Vegas + one day trip.
