Carson City
Nevada's small state capital 30 miles south of Reno — historic downtown, the Nevada State Museum, and V&T railroad access. Carson City is the state capital and has 58,000 people — smaller than a Vegas suburb. The Nevada State Capitol on Carson Street is a modest 1871 sandstone building with a silver dome; you can walk in the front door on a weekday morning. The historic district around Carson and Robinson has Victorian homes, the Nevada State Museum (in the old Carson City Mint), and the Kit Carson Trail, a self-guided walking tour marked with a blue line on the sidewalk. At 9pm the streets are quiet — most restaurants close at 9-10pm.Carson works as a base for anyone hitting Virginia City (25 min north), Lake Tahoe (30 min west), or Genoa (12 min south). It is a bad base for nightlife of any description. There are three small casinos (Carson Nugget, Gold Dust West, Casino Fandango) with $10-$15 tables and no clubs. Rooms are cheap — $90-$150 midweek — and hotels along South Carson Street are functional if not stylish.
