The Comstock Lode silver-boom town preserved on a mountainside — wooden sidewalks, saloons and Mark Twain's old newspaper. Virginia City sits at 6,200 feet on the side of Mount Davidson, 25 miles south of Reno on SR-341. In 1874 it had 25,000 people and produced $400 million in silver. Now it has 850 permanent residents and about 4 blocks of preserved 1870s buildings along C Street — wooden sidewalks, saloons, the Bucket of Blood, the Territorial Enterprise office where Samuel Clemens first wrote as Mark Twain. At 9pm most storefronts are closed but the Delta Saloon and Ponderosa Saloon are still pouring. This is not a theme park — it's an actual town that leans hard into its history.Come as a day trip from Reno or Carson unless you want to stay in a haunted-hotel novelty. Winter closes half the businesses. The parades — Camel Races in September, Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry in March, International Mustang Stampede — are worth planning around. The V&T Railroad steam train runs from Carson City on select summer weekends. It's a real Nevada experience without a slot machine chain smoke haze.
