What CES does to rates
CES runs the first full week of January and brings roughly 130,000 attendees. Every hotel within shuttle distance of the Las Vegas Convention Center — Westgate, Resorts World, Wynn, Encore, Palazzo, Venetian — sells out months ahead at 4-6x normal rates. Even Circus Circus, normally $40, hits $250. Rideshare surges routinely triple, and taxi lines at Harry Reid stretch 45 minutes.
The trick most veterans use: book refundable rates in October, then rebook if better deals appear. The CES housing bureau opens in early autumn with negotiated rates that undercut public rates by 20-40%, but inventory vanishes within days. If you missed that window, look at Henderson (Green Valley Ranch, M Resort) for $180-250 and drive in.
Where to actually stay
Closest walk to LVCC is Westgate — a covered pedestrian bridge lands you at the North Hall. Resorts World is a 10-minute walk via footbridge. Renaissance Las Vegas (a Marriott, no casino) is directly across Paradise Road and popular with attendees who want quiet. For Strip nightlife plus CES access, Wynn and Encore run frequent shuttles.
Avoid: anything south of Flamingo Road unless you enjoy 45-minute Monorail rides. The Monorail runs from MGM Grand to Sahara/Westgate and is genuinely useful during CES — a $13 day pass beats surge pricing. Skip Downtown properties unless you have a rental car; the drive back at 6pm is brutal.
What is open and busy
Every restaurant on the Strip takes reservations weeks out during CES. Steakhouses (SW at Wynn, Bavette's at Park MGM, Carbone at Aria) are impossible walk-ins. Sportsbooks are quieter than usual because attendees are working. Pools are closed or heated-only. Dayclubs are shut for the season.
The upside: CES parties are everywhere, many with open bars if you have a badge. Off-site events at Omnia, Zouk and Hakkasan often go private. Weather is 55-60F days and cold nights — bring a real coat, the walk between Convention Center halls is genuinely long and outdoor.

Can I show up without a hotel booking?+
Technically yes, but expect $600+ for anything within 5 miles and possibly nothing at all under 10 miles. Boulder City and Henderson sometimes have rooms at 3x rate. Do not gamble on this.
Is the Monorail worth it during CES?+
Yes. A three-day pass is around $32 and it runs every 4-8 minutes with a stop at the Convention Center (LVCC station). It bypasses Strip traffic entirely.
