The three downtowns
Fremont Street Experience is the LED-canopy tourist zone — five blocks of casinos, buskers and zipline riders overhead. Loud, cheap drinks, $25 to $50 hotel rooms if you look. Fremont East, immediately east of the canopy, is the cocktail bar and craft beer strip — Atomic Liquors, Commonwealth, Downtown Cocktail Room. This is where locals actually drink. The 18b Arts District, half a mile south, is the newest scene: warehouses converted to breweries (HUDL, Nevada Brew Works), record stores and First Friday art walks that pull 20,000 people.
Where to stay downtown
Circa is the flagship — 21-plus, six-story sportsbook, rooftop pool amphitheatre, rooms $130 to $250. The Golden Nugget is the classic play with the shark tank pool, $110 to $200. The D and Downtown Grand are solid mid-tier. Oasis at Gold Spike is the hostel option, dorms from $40. Avoid the strip motels on Fremont past 8th Street — the area is improving but not there yet. Downtown is a $15 to $25 Uber from the Strip, or 20 minutes on the Deuce bus for $6.

Fremont Street canopy and Fremont East are heavily patrolled and fine. Walk west past Main Street or south past Charleston with more awareness — improving but still gritty.

Strip for the classic Vegas experience. Downtown if you have been before or want cheaper rooms and more character.
