Why Henderson matters
Henderson sits 15 minutes southeast of the Strip and has a population of 330,000 — bigger than Reno. Green Valley Ranch and M Resort are the two casino hotels worth booking, both from $150 midweek with better pools and quieter gaming than the Strip. The Water Street District downtown has been steadily reviving with wine bars and the Emerald Island Casino — a cash-only classic that still does $1 blackjack. Lake Las Vegas, a manmade lake with two resorts (Westin and Hilton Lake Las Vegas), is 20 minutes further east and feels like a different state.
Getting outside
The River Mountains Loop Trail is a 34-mile paved loop connecting Henderson to Boulder City and Lake Mead — bring a bike. Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area, just south, has petroglyphs and desert bighorn. For food, Sweet Addiction on Eastern is the best local bakery, and Cafe Leone in Green Valley is the neighborhood Italian everyone gatekeeps. Henderson is where Vegas locals send you when you say you have seen the Strip and want the real Nevada. Uber to the Strip runs $25 to $40; rental car more sensible if basing here.
