The basics
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is 25 minutes west of the Strip on Charleston Boulevard. Entry $20 per car, timed reservations required October through May (book at recreation.gov, $2 fee, released a month out). The 13-mile one-way scenic loop takes 90 minutes without stops, three to five hours with hikes. Best times: sunrise and the hour before sunset when the sandstone glows red. Summer midday is dangerous — 110 degrees in the canyon with no shade. Bring three liters of water per person even for short hikes.
The best short hikes
Calico Tank is the best two-hour hike — 2.5 miles round trip through sandstone slot canyons to a hidden water pocket with Vegas skyline views. Ice Box Canyon is 2.6 miles, shaded, ends at a seasonal waterfall (dry by June most years). Lost Creek Loop is 0.75 miles and works with kids or bad knees. Skip the Keystone Thrust hike unless you love scrambling — the payoff is real but the last mile is unmarked. Combine the drive with breakfast in Summerlin (Vintner Grill or Echo & Rig) and lunch back at Red Rock Casino for a good half-day.

Can I do Red Rock without a car?+
Tour operators run half-day trips from the Strip for $80 to $150. Uber one-way is $40 to $60 but return is hard — no signal at trailheads.
