Winter: January to March
Reno winter is cheap and functional. Peppermill, Grand Sierra and Silver Legacy rooms run $65-110 midweek, $100-160 weekends. Weather is 45F days, 25F nights, occasional snow that clears fast. The airport (RNO) stays open reliably. Skiers use Reno as a cheaper base than Tahoe — Mt Rose is 45 minutes up NV-431, Heavenly is 90 minutes.
January brings the National Bowling Stadium's high-roller events and quiet casino floors. February and March pick up with basketball tournaments and spring break weekends. Everything is open year-round downtown.
Summer events: June to September
Reno's summer is dry, hot (95F) and event-packed. Reno Rodeo runs mid-to-late June (rooms +50%). Hot August Nights, a classic-car festival, dominates the first full week of August — Peppermill, Atlantis and Grand Sierra fill and rates hit $250. The Great Reno Balloon Race (early September) and the National Championship Air Races (Stead Airport, mid-September) each add a weekend spike.
Late August is the Burning Man effect: for the week before Labor Day and the two days after, every hotel between Reno and I-80 east is booked by Burners staging in and out. Rates jump, and Walmart parking lots fill with RVs. If you are not going to Burning Man, avoid these dates.
Shoulders: April-May and October-December
April and May are excellent value. Rates return to $70-90 midweek, weather is 65-75F, and events are limited. October is similarly quiet after the air races end, with cool nights and clear days. November is soft outside Thanksgiving, and early December is the cheapest week of the year outside major holidays.
One catch: Reno's convention calendar drives midweek surprises. Check the Reno-Sparks Convention Center schedule before booking — a bowling congress or safety conference can push rates 3x for a random Tuesday. School holidays follow the Washoe County calendar; late December break is busy at the arcade-heavy properties like Circus Circus Reno.
Good to know
Is Reno a viable ski base?+
Yes for Mt Rose (45 min) and even Heavenly (90 min in good weather). Rates run 40-60% below Stateline lodging. Add rental-car cost and mountain traffic to the math.
When is the Reno airport busiest?+
The Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after Burning Man. Both see delays and rental-car shortages. Book cars weeks ahead for those dates.
