Who Downtown suits
Downtown suits repeat visitors who are done with the Strip, gamblers who want lower table minimums ($5 blackjack still exists at the El Cortez), and anyone flying in for two nights who wants to walk everywhere. Rooms at the Golden Nugget, Plaza and Circa typically run $60 to $150 midweek and $150 to $300 on weekends. Resort fees are lower here, around $25 to $35, and self-parking at most properties is free if you play, cheap if you don’t. Circa is adults-only over 21.
It does not suit families with small kids — Fremont Street after dark is loud, drunk and full of costumed street performers — or anyone whose main plan is the Sphere, T-Mobile Arena or Strip clubs and shows. A rideshare to the Bellagio is 15 minutes and $18 to $28.
What is within walking distance
The Fremont Street Experience canopy covers five blocks of casinos: Golden Nugget, Binion's, Four Queens, Fremont and the Plaza, plus the SlotZilla zipline. Walk two blocks east and you hit the Fremont East district with Atomic Liquors (the oldest bar in Las Vegas, opened 1952), the Downtown Container Park, and a cluster of independent restaurants. The Mob Museum and Neon Museum are both about a 10-minute walk from Fremont. Circa's Stadium Swim rooftop is open year-round with heated pools.
The Arts District along Main Street is another 15 minutes on foot and worth it for coffee at Vesta and dinner at Esther's Kitchen.

Is Downtown safer or more dangerous than the Strip?+
The Fremont Street canopy itself is heavily policed and fine. Walk more than three blocks off it after midnight and you are in a different environment — stick to rideshares late.
Can I gamble cheaper Downtown?+
Yes, meaningfully. $5 blackjack, $3 craps and single-deck games still exist at El Cortez, the D and Main Street Station in ways they simply don’t on the Strip anymore.
