Who Elko is for
Elko suits I-80 drivers between Reno and Salt Lake City, hikers heading to Lamoille Canyon (30 minutes southeast, often called Nevada's Yosemite), heli-skiers using Ruby Mountains Heli-Experience, and anyone attending the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering (last week of January, genuinely famous). What is walkable
From downtown Elko you can walk to the Northeastern Nevada Museum (surprisingly good, with a Shoshone gallery and Basque exhibits), the Western Folklife Center where Cowboy Poetry happens, the Star Hotel and Biltoki for authentic Basque family-style dinners — lamb, oxtail, chorizo, all included — and roughly a dozen bars and restaurants. Lamoille Canyon and the Ruby Mountains trailheads are 20 to 30 minutes by car. The California Trail Interpretive Center sits 8 miles west on I-80 exit 292.
