Who Sparks suits
Sparks suits families using the Sparks Marina, travelers to Reno-Sparks Convention Center events at the Nugget, anyone attending Hot August Nights or the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off (Labor Day weekend, genuinely famous), and drivers on I-80 heading east to Elko or Salt Lake City who want a quieter overnight than downtown Reno. The Nugget Casino Resort is the anchor at $90 to $180 a night. Chain hotels along I-80 exit 19 run $80 to $140.
It does not suit anyone whose trip is centered on downtown Reno's nightlife, the Truckee Riverwalk or Midtown. Sparks's Victorian Square is pleasant but small — about three blocks of restored buildings — and its casino scene is essentially the Nugget alone.
What is around Sparks
Victorian Square in downtown Sparks is walkable from the Nugget and hosts free summer concerts and the rib cook-off. Sparks Marina Park, a 77-acre lake in a former gravel pit, is 10 minutes by car with swimming, kayak rentals and a paved loop trail. The Outlets at Legends shopping center is next to the marina with about 60 stores. Reno's arch is 4 miles west — a 10-minute drive or a $12 rideshare. Pyramid Lake, the giant tribal-managed desert lake worth seeing, is 35 minutes north.

They share a metro area and border, but Sparks is a separate incorporated city with its own downtown, government and character — quieter and more residential.
Should I book Sparks to save money?+
Only if you have a car. The savings on the room disappear if you are rideshareing to Reno's restaurants every night.
