March to May: prime season
Vegas sits between 65F and 90F, pool weather starts mid-April, and desert wildflowers peak in Red Rock in April. Room rates spike around March Madness (mid-March) and the National Finals Rodeo. Book conventions on the calendar before locking dates; CES in January and SEMA in November push Strip rates 3x normal. NASCAR week in early March also spikes rates on the south Strip.
June to August: hot and cheap
July averages 106F daytime with lows in the mid-80s. Pool clubs are the point of the trip, and rates on the Strip fall 20 to 30 percent versus spring. Do not plan hikes after 9am. Great Basin at 7,000 feet stays a comfortable 75F, and Tahoe is peak season with lake water hitting 68F. Reno hits 95F but dries out fast at night.
September to October: the sweet spot
The best month for a road trip is October. Vegas cools to 80F, Great Basin's Wheeler Peak drive is still open, Tahoe fall colors peak mid-October along the Truckee River, and Red Rock hiking becomes pleasant again. Downside: Formula 1 has taken over three days in November, and rates on the Strip during that weekend are absurd (rooms from $800).
November to February: winter Vegas
Vegas winter is 60F days, 40F nights, and pool clubs close (except the heated Encore Beach Club). Christmas week and New Year's are the year's second peak. January CES pushes convention hotels to $400. Ski season at Lee Canyon (45 minutes from the Strip) runs December to April; day passes are $75 to $95. Tahoe skiing starts at Diamond Peak and Mount Rose on the Nevada side, mid-November through April.

Is it too hot to visit Vegas in July?+
Not if pools and casinos are your plan. Do outdoor stuff before 9am and after 7pm. Do not attempt Valley of Fire midday in summer.
When does it rain in Nevada?+
Rarely. Vegas averages 4 inches a year. Brief thunderstorms hit in late July and August (monsoon season) and can cause flash floods in Red Rock. Reno gets slightly more, mostly winter.
Do Vegas hotels have blackout dates?+
