Great Basin sits on the Utah border five hours north of the Strip, and it's the antidote to Vegas neon: silent sagebrush basins climbing to glacier-carved cirques, a small living glacier below Wheeler Peak, and stands of 5,000-year-old bristlecone pines. It's a certified International Dark Sky Park, so the after-dark spectacle rivals anything on Fremont Street. Base yourself in Ely for casino comforts and drive out at dawn, or camp inside the park at one of five developed campgrounds.
Do the loop in this order: book a Lehman Caves tour online first (they sell out weeks ahead in summer), then drive the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive to 10,000 feet and hike the Bristlecone-Glacier trail (2.8 mi one way). Return for a ranger astronomy program at the amphitheater. Cell service dies at Baker — download maps and cave tickets before you leave Ely. Snow closes the upper scenic drive roughly November through May.
Hours

Good to know
How much does Great Basin National Park cost?+
Entry is free — no gate fee. Lehman Caves tours cost $15 (Grand Palace, 90 min) or $10 (Lodge Room, 60 min); ages 5-15 pay $8/$5.
Are there free entry days?+
The park itself is always free. Cave tours are ticketed year-round with no free days, but ranger-led hikes and evening astronomy programs are included at no cost.
How long do I need for a visit?+
Plan a full day (8-10 hours) to combine a cave tour, the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive and one alpine hike. A quick stop for just the cave and visitor center takes 3 hours.
When is it closed?+
The park never closes, but the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive above Upper Lehman is gated from about November to late May, and Lehman Caves closes Thanksgiving, December 25 and January 1.
Do I need to book in advance?+
Yes for Lehman Caves — reserve at recreation.gov up to 30 days out. Campground sites at Wheeler Peak and Lower Lehman also need reservations May-October.
What is the nearest town or airport?+
Baker (pop. 68) sits at the park gate on US-50. Ely, 65 miles west, has the closest fuel, hotels/casinos and a regional airport. McCarran/Harry Reid in Las Vegas is a 4.5-hour drive.
