Lake Mead National Recreation Area

The nation's largest reservoir wrapped around Hoover Dam — 1.5 million acres of houseboats, hot springs and canyon paddling half an hour from the Strip.

2 min read

Lake Mead is Vegas's saltwater equivalent — the enormous blue backdrop you see from every departing flight. Damming the Colorado in 1935 created 550 miles of shoreline and a national recreation area bigger than Rhode Island. On any summer weekend you’ll find bachelor-party pontoons at Boulder Harbor, honeymoon kayakers threading Emerald Cave, road cyclists on the River Mountains Loop, and dam engineers in hard hats guiding Hoover Dam tours. Water levels have dropped dramatically — the 'bathtub ring' on the cliffs is now taller than a 15-story hotel — which has exposed pre-dam ghost towns and old boat wrecks worth the visit alone.

Base yourself in Boulder City (walkable, no gambling, 1930s dam-worker charm) rather than driving in daily from the Strip. Start at Alan Bible Visitor Center, drive Northshore Road east for the best canyon views, and book a kayak tour of Emerald Cave through Boulder City outfitters ($80-110). The Hoover Dam tour ($30, 1 hour) is a separate ticket at the dam itself. Summer water temps hit 85°F — swimming is glorious but shade is nonexistent, so pack an umbrella.

A full day covers Hoover Dam tour + Boulder Beach swim + Northshore scenic drive. Add a night in Boulder City if adding a kayak tour or a houseboat rental (2-night minimum).

When is it closed?+

The recreation area never closes. The Alan Bible Visitor Center shuts Thanksgiving and December 25. Hoover Dam tours don’t run Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year's Day.

Do I need reservations?+

Not for park entry. Hoover Dam Powerplant Tours are walk-up only, but the longer Dam Tour ($30) should be booked at usbr.gov/lc/hooverdam. Kayak outfitters and houseboat rentals book out 2-3 months ahead for summer.

How do I get there from the Strip?+

30 minutes southeast via I-215 to US-93. No public transit; rideshare to the visitor center runs $45-55 one way. Bus tours combining Hoover Dam and Lake Mead depart Strip hotels daily for around $75.
