Lake Tahoe's Nevada side is the state's other kind of playground — 14,000 acres of pine forest, granite bays and water so clear you can count boulders 60 feet down. Sand Harbor is the crown jewel: a horseshoe of white sand tucked between rounded granite domes, with a swimmable cove, kayak rentals and boat-in-only picnic spots. From July into August the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival stages plays on a sand-floor amphitheater with the lake as backdrop — one of America's most photogenic theatre venues. It works as a wedding side trip, a corporate offsite escape, or the natural counterpart to a Reno casino weekend.
Arrive early — Sand Harbor's 200-space lot fills by 9:30 on summer weekends and rangers close the gate until spaces open. If you miss it, park at Incline Village's Preston Field lot ($10) and take the East Shore Express shuttle ($4) which runs every 20 minutes. Bring a swimsuit, water shoes for the rocky shallows, and cash for the on-site cafe. Divers should book the underwater interpretive trail off Diver's Cove — the only marked underwater trail in a Nevada state park.

How much is admission?+
$15 per vehicle for out-of-state plates ($10 Nevada) at Sand Harbor and Cave Rock Memorial Day-Labor Day; $10/$5 in winter. Spooner Lake is $10/$5 year-round. Walk-in and bike-in is $2.
Are there any free entry times?+
No free days, but Nevada residents 65+ get free entry with a Senior Silver Pass. Bike-in/walk-in access at $2 is effectively the cheapest way in on busy summer weekends.
How long should I spend at Sand Harbor?+
A full day if you’re swimming or kayaking — 6 to 8 hours. A photo-and-lunch stop takes 2 hours. Shakespeare Festival evenings run 19:30 to about 22:30.
When is the park closed?+
Never fully closed, but the Sand Harbor entrance road is gated overnight and closes at 16:30 in winter. Heavy snow occasionally shuts NV-28 access — check nvroads.com in January-March.
Do I need to book ahead?+
Day-use is first-come, first-served — no reservation possible. Shakespeare tickets ($30-95) at laketahoeshakespeare.com sell out weeks ahead in July. Boat launch reservations required at Sand Harbor June-September.
How do I get there from Reno?+
45 miles / 55 minutes south on NV-431 (Mt Rose Highway) to Incline Village, then NV-28 south for 3 miles. Reno-Tahoe International Airport is the closest hub with rental cars.
