If you’ve seen Star Trek Generations, Total Recall or any Instagram influencer's Vegas reel, you’ve seen Valley of Fire. The 46,000-acre state park is a compact greatest-hits album of Mojave sandstone: 3,000-year-old petroglyphs, bighorn sheep, and formations named for what they look like (Elephant Rock, Fire Wave, the Beehives). It's under an hour from the Strip via I-15 and works brilliantly as a half-day escape between a night out and an afternoon poolside. October to April is prime; summer highs regularly hit 115°F and rangers actively discourage midday hikes.
Enter through the west gate off I-15 exit 75, pay the $15 out-of-state fee at the self-serve kiosk, and drive straight to Mouse's Tank Road — the 6-mile spur to White Domes is the visual jackpot. Park at Fire Wave lot (mile 4.5) for the 1.5-mile round-trip wave hike, then continue to White Domes for a 1.1-mile slot canyon loop. Sunset at Elephant Rock, just inside the east entrance, wraps the day. Bring more water than you think — there is none past the visitor center.

How much does Valley of Fire cost?+
$15 per vehicle for out-of-state plates, $10 for Nevada residents. Camping is $25/night plus the day-use fee, or $35 with hookups.
Are there free entry days?+
No. Valley of Fire is a Nevada state park and does not participate in federal fee-free days. The America the Beautiful pass does NOT cover entry.
How long should I spend there?+
Half a day (4-5 hours) hits Fire Wave, White Domes and the petroglyphs comfortably. A quick drive-through of the scenic loop takes 90 minutes; add sunrise or sunset and you’re at 6-7 hours.
When is it closed?+
The park itself never closes, but gates are staffed only during daylight and the visitor center shuts on Thanksgiving and December 25. Extreme heat advisories may close trails in July-August.
Do I need a reservation?+
No reservation for day use — just pay at the kiosk. Campsites at Atlatl Rock and Arch Rock can be reserved on ReserveNevada.com from October to May and go fast on weekends.
How do I get there without a car?+
There is no public transit. Rideshare from the Strip runs $80-100 one way and drivers rarely wait. Guided tours from Vegas hotels cost $120-160 per person including transport and a picnic.
