Pahrump

Wine country and desert crossroads 60 miles west of Vegas — gateway to Death Valley and legal brothels on the county line. Pahrump is in Nye County, 60 miles west of Las Vegas over Mountain Springs summit on SR-160. Population 40,000, spread out over 20 miles of valley floor at 2,700 feet elevation. It has three casinos (Pahrump Nugget, Saddle West, Gold Town), Nevada's largest winery (Pahrump Valley Winery), and Death Valley National Park's eastern entrance 40 miles further west. At 9pm the town is quiet — this is not a walking town, everything is 2-8 miles apart on Highway 160 and Homestead Road. Rooms $80-$140.Pahrump works as a Death Valley base for anyone who wants cheaper lodging than Furnace Creek or Stovepipe Wells inside the park. It also has Nevada's only legal brothels within reach — Sheri's Ranch and Chicken Ranch on the west side of town — which draw a specific curious tourism. Skip Pahrump if you want scenery from your window (the town itself is flat, mostly single-story), restaurants after 9pm, or any walking-friendly downtown. Wine tasting at Pahrump Valley Winery ($15) is a legit good afternoon.

Is Pahrump a good Death Valley base?

Yes, if you want cheaper lodging than the park's $250-$500 rooms. Pahrump to Furnace Creek is 90 min. Trade-off: you’re not waking up in the park for sunrise at Zabriskie or Mesquite Dunes. Overnight in the park at least once if you can afford it.

Is there anything to do in Pahrump itself?

Wine tasting at Pahrump Valley Winery, the two casinos with bowling and a small water park (Cottonwood at the Nugget), and Front Sight or Spring Mountain if you booked ahead. Otherwise it's a base, not a destination.
